ATM DSL Modem Installation Guide

ATM DSL Modem Install Guide

Introduction DSL works on your existing phone line at a higher frequency than we can hear. The beauty of this is that it allows you to use your phone line as you normally would without having to purchase a separate phone line for it. You can be on the Internet and use DSL on the same phone line simultaneously! The only catch is that devices on the DSL phone line (other than the DSL modem itself) can sometimes be affected by a DSL enabled line. That's where the microfilters come in handy. This DSL modem installation requires the use of your included microfilters with any equipment sharing your DSL phone line (e.g., telephone, fax machine, analog modem, answering machine) at your location. They are used do filter out high frequency 'noise' on your DSL line. Several devices may share a microfilter if used in combination with a splitter.

Note: Do not use a microfilter with your DSL modem.

Whats In The Box?

* 1 (ATM) DSL modem
* 1 Microfilter
* 1 Phone (RJ-11) Cable
* 1 Ethernet (Straight, RJ-45) Cable
* 1 AC Power Adapter, 1 power cord

Note: Additional microfilters, RJ-11 and RJ-45 cables may be purchased from 3rd party vendors such as your local CompUSA or Radio Shack.

The DSL Modem

   The back of your DSL modem will look like this...

   Starting from the left, you should see 4 items.
  • The 1st port on the left is labeled "LINE". You would plug your DSL enabled phone line (RJ-11) from your wall jack into here.
  • The 2nd item from the left is the power switch. It has 2 symbols "O" and "|". The "O" position indicates off and the "|" position indicates on.
  • The 3rd item from the left is the power port. Plug in your included AC adapter into this port to supply power to the modem.
  • 1 Ethernet (Straight, RJ-45) Cable
  • The last port on the right is labeled "Ethernet" and accepts an ethernet (RJ-45) cable to connect to your computer or network.

The Microfilters

The DSL microfilters are simple to install. They simply plug into a standard phone wall jack (RJ-11). From there, plug in the device that is going to be used on the DSL phone line into the other end of the filter. Here's what a typical filter looks like...

Typical Installation Using A Phone Line Splitter

  • Start in the room where you plan to install your DSL modem. Locate the existing DSL enabled phone line wall jack (RJ-11) and remove any existing cords that may be plugged into it.
  • Connect a phone line splitter into the wall jack.
  • Connect the DSL modem into one of the outlets on the phone line splitter by using a standard phone line cord (RJ-11). One end should plug into the phone splitter while the other end should plug into the "Line" port on your DSL modem.
  • Plug a microfilter into an available port on the phone line splitter.
  • Connect your phone (or other device) using a standard phone cord (RJ-11) into the microfilter.
  • Connect any other devices that are using the DSL enabled phone line to a microfilter.
  • Connect your computer to the DSL modem by using an ethernet (straight, RJ-45) cable. One end of this cable should plug into the "Data" port on the back of the DSL modem and the other end should be plugged into your computer's network card.
  • Connect the included power cord into your DSL modem. Once all 3 DSL modem lights turn on and stop flashing, the installation is complete!

Typical Installation Without Using A Phone Splitter

  • Start in the room where you plan to install your DSL modem. Locate the existing DSL enabled phone line wall jack (RJ-11) and remove any existing cords that may be plugged into it.
  • Connect the DSL modem to your wall jack using a standard phone cable (RJ-11). One end should plug into the wall jack and the other end should be plugged into the "Line" port on the back of your DSL modem.

Note: If the "Ready" light on the front of the modem does not turn on or remains flashing, this may indicate a problem with your modem or your DSL connection. Try turning off the power to the DSL modem for a few minutes. Turn on the modem and watch the status of the "Ready" light. If it continues to remain off or flashing, please contact LavaNet's friendly and helpful technical support team for assistance.
